Prolonged walking or running is a common cause that makes your feet hurt. However, there might be some other reasons like an underlying injury, sprain, or some other medical conditions. Walking is one of the essential activities in your daily life. Likewise, it doesn’t only keep you moving, it also helps you to be in better physical shape. Due to numerous reasons, occasional pains and aches are common, especially after walking for a long time. Read on to find why your feet might hurt during walking and how can you get the relief.
Cuboid syndrome is a common problem for athletes. Excessive training makes their feet hurt. It usually occurs when the ligaments and joints around the cuboid bone of your foot are either torn or injured. As a result, it can also happen due to the partial dislocation of the bones.
Prolonged pain on the smallest toe is the major symptom of cuboid syndrome. The pain may get worse due to placing weight on foot, while standing can also get very difficult.
Some other Symptoms of Cuboid Syndrome:
- Swelling around the ankle
- The weakness of the toes
- Partial or complete loss of mobility of the toes
RICE method is usually an effective treatment as excessive training makes your feet hurt. RICE method includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation.
Arthritis is one of the most common causes of pain in the feet. It can cause pain and stiffness of the joints, bones, and muscles of the feet.
Arthritis is of different types:
- Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the big toe.
- Rheumatoid arthritis affects several joints of both feet.
- It also causes stiffness and severe pain.
- Gout usually develops after an injury to the big toe and leads to severe pain.
Treatment for arthritis depends on the types and conditions. Hence it includes topical or oral anti-inflammation, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and gout medications, etc.
Flat feet usually occur at the time of birth and may progress with childhood. Moreover, it occurs when the arches of feet are not developed correctly. Sometimes it may also develop due to gradual wear and tear and can cause your feet hurt. Rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes mellitus can also increase the risk of flat feet. Depending on the condition, your doctor will recommend supportive shoes, arch supports, and stretching exercises, etc.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome:
Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) caused due to the compression of the posterior tibial nerve inside the tarsal tunnel. It is a narrow passage inside the ankles, surrounded by the bones and ligaments.
The compression of the tibial nerve can cause burning, tingling, pain, and numbness of the feet. Hence, the pain gets worse even due to slight movement.
- Over the counter pain, relievers are sometimes very useful for tarsal tunnel syndrome.
- Wearing a splint or brace can also give temporary relief.
- If there is no improvement caused by TTS, your doctor might recommend corticosteroid injections or surgery.
The sprain of the main joint of big doe is known as turf toe. It usually happens due to the abnormal bending of the big toe (common condition for athletes, especially the football players).
The most common symptoms of turf toe are swelling, pain, and difficulty moving of the big toe joint. Symptoms may get worse due to continuous movement or further injury.
If swelling makes your feet hurt, it is due to turf toe. Give proper rest with cold and warm compression. Also, the elevation of the big toe is a better treatment option.
Inflammation of a tendon is called tendinitis. Tendons are thick fibrous cords that connect muscles to the bones. The symptoms may vary depending on which tendon is affected. The most common symptoms of tendinitis are stiffness and pain that gets worse with movement. Achilles tendinitis affects the Achilles tendon. Thus it causes pain at the back of the heel. Extensor tendinitis causes pain and stiffness in the middle portion of the foot.
Peroneal tendinitis causes pain at the back of your foot.
Proper rest, icing and OTS medications usually improve the condition of tendinitis. In some rare cases, your doctor may recommend for corticosteroids, physical therapy or surgery. However, it is only prescribed in very complicated cases.
Inflammation of the tissue surrounding the nerve in the ball of the foot is known as Morton’s neuroma. It is a rare condition that makes your feet hurt. It can happen due to extreme pressure, irritation or severe trauma, etc.
Common symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma are:
- You might feel that you are stepping on a marble or stone.
- Moderate to severe pain in the ball of the foot gets worse while walking or wearing shoes.
- Numbness and tingling of the toes.
Conservative treatments like OTC medications, orthotics, and wearing comfortable shoes are suitable treatment options. But if the case is severe, the doctor might suggest for corticosteroid injections.
Painful inflammation of the ball of the foot is medically termed as metatarsalgia. Heavy running or jumping can cause metatarsalgia. Sometimes, it may happen due to wearing uncomfortable shoes or due to some other deformities of the foot as well.
Symptoms of metatarsalgia:
- Burning, aching or sharp pain starting from the ball of the foot and extending to other parts.
- Pain gets worse even after slight movement.
- You may feel that you have a pebble inside your shoe(s).
Icing and proper resting can relieve the symptoms of metatarsalgia. You can also wear the arch supports or insoles.
When to Seek Medical Attention!
When any activity makes your feet Feet hurt, it can be relieved quickly. It includes home remedies, proper resting, cold applications, and OTC medications. The pain doesn’t subside within two weeks. Hence, it is always better consulting a doctor if:
- Continuous swelling that isn’t improving within two-four days.
- You are a diabetic patient and having foot pain for more than one week.
- Tingling or numbness felt in the feet.
