Vitamin D and Colon cancer – Risk of Vitamins.

Colon cancer is the third most common type of cancer as well as the leading cause of cancer-linked deaths. Ignoring the condition can lead to severe consequences. Thus, consulting a doctor, diagnosing the condition and opting for the best treatment are essential. Did you know low levels of vitamin-D increases the risk of colon cancer!

Importance of Vitamin D:

Vitamin-D plays a vital role in keeping a person healthy. Low level of vitamin-D in the blood increases the risks of a wide range of illness. Apart from getting vitamin-D from different dietary sources like fortified foods and fatty fish, the human body naturally produces the vitamin in the skin when it comes in contact with sunlight.

The influence of vitamin-D is wide and not just limited to bone health. A higher level of vitamin can be cancer protective! New research conducted by researchers suggests; the individuals with above the supposed amount of vitamin-D required for bone health have a 22% lower risk of colon cancer. However, the research didn’t prove that sunlight can drop the risks of colon cancer, but the rising level of vitamin-D further can decrease the risks of cancer.

Risk of Vitamin D – Colon Cancer:

An increase of vitamin-D in the blood declines the risks of colon cancer near about 7% in men and 19% in women. The study suggested; the risks of cancer were less in women in comparison to men with an adequate amount of vitamin-D in blood.

In 2011, the U.S. National Academy of Medicine presented vitamin-D guidelines concluding that the medical benefits of vitamin-D for preventing cancer are not sufficient.  Thus, a team of researchers combined data from varying 17 studies and involved 5, 706 colon cancer patients as well as 7, 107 healthy persons from the US, Asia, and Europe.

During the study, the researchers reanalyzed blood samples of 1/3 of the people involved in the experiment. The researchers came out with a conclusion that vitamin-D protected from colon cancer and particularly women are highly beneficial. As per the research, at least one person in every 24 women and 22 men develop colon cancer in their lifetime.

However, individuals with an adequate level of vitamin-D stay prevented from the risks of developing colon cancer.

  • Sunlight is a rich source of vitamin-D and casual walk, or running at morning or evening for at least 30 minutes is enough to stimulate sufficient vitamin-D production in the body.
  • Fortified foods like milk, orange juice, and cereals are good sources of the vitamin. Adding such foods in your daily diet can maintain the vitamin level in your body.
  • Salmon, trout, tuna, and swordfish are also good sources of vitamin-D. Non-vegans can get an ample amount of the vitamin from these sources and increase its level in the blood.

The researchers were unable to clarify how vitamin-D gives protection against cancer, but they suspect that the vitamin controls the growth of abnormal cells and promotes programmed cell death. As uncontrolled growth and spreading of abnormal cells cause cancer, vitamin-D effectively limits the production of such cells thus preventing cancer.

Vitamin-D is essential for the body, but overdosage can be toxic! Thus, people should rely on natural sources of vitamin instead of relying on supplements. Apart from this, it is not recommended for sun exposure to raise the vitamin-D level in their blood as the risks of developing skin cancer levels up for the harmful UV radiation.

The supplements of vitamin-D at modest could be safe and may not cause any harm. There is no strong support for establishing the relationship between this vitamin and colon cancer determined in the treatment guidelines. But, the research defines this vitamin as the safest things to prevent colon cancer. Thus, this vitamin is a reasonable approach to stay prevented from developing colon cancer.
