Cholesterol is a fat-like substance which is available in the cells of our body. Our liver produces cholesterol, which can be found in some foods like meat and dairy products. For proper working of our body cholesterol is highly needed, but the excess of it in our blood can provide a risk of artery diseases.
Total cholesterol is the measure of total cholesterol in our body. It is of two types low density lipoprotein known as LDL and high-density lipoprotein known as HDL cholesterol.
The low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is also known as bad cholesterol. It is the source of cholesterol accumulation and arteries blockage.
On the other hand high-density lipoprotein is also known as good cholesterol. It takes the crucial part in the process of removing excess cholesterol from arteries.
Non-HDL is the inclusion of LDL and other types of cholesterol. You can count your Non-HDL by deducting HDL from your total cholesterol.
It is another type of fat in our blood, which comes with a risk of heart diseases. An excess of triglycerides is prone to women especially.
Measuring Cholesterol Level
In true sense a cholesterol is a fatty substance or lipid, which is vital for the function of our body. For measuring your cholesterol level you have to undergo a lipoprotein test, usually a blood test. You have to be in empty stomach except water for 9 to 12 hours. And result provides information about your lipid profile or cholesterol level.
Cholesterol numbers are measured in milligrams per deciliter,i.e mg/dL. Let’s discuss the healthy level of cholesterol based on age and gender.
Cholesterol levels for adults
- The total cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL are known as the required cholesterol level in an adult. Whereas a reading more than 240 mg/dL is considered high. Apart from that the LDL level should have to fall in the range of 100 mg/dL to 129 mg/dL. And the HDL level has to be 60 mg/dL or higher. The level below 40 mg/dL comes under the scanner of several heart diseases.
Cholesterol levels for children
- An acceptable range of total cholesterol level for a child is less than 170 mg/dL. Any reading of total cholesterol over 200 in a child is too high. The optimal range of LDL cholesterol for a child is less than 110 mg/dL.
Why should you Lower Cholesterol Range?
An excessive lipid in your blood will leads to hyperlipidemia. It also increases the chances of various serious health conditions such as developing arterial diseases. It enhances the risk of atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries, heart attack, stroke, and other peripheral arterial diseases. And these diseases happens due to the restriction of blood flow to your heart, and rest of your body parts because of cholesterol build up in the wall of arteries. It also increases the risk of blood clot. Due to high cholesterol level you can also develop coronary heart diseases, pain in your chest during any physical activity. On the other hand triglycerides are not a type of cholesterol, it comes under lipoprotein panel. Its level should remain below 150 mg/dL.
Every individual should go for a cholesterol test as per the predefined time to eradicate risk factors in future. And the test depends on your age, and family history as well. The normal prescribed time as follow:
People in the age of 19 or younger
- The first test should be done in between the age 9 to 11
- Children should undergo such test once in a five year
- If there is a genetic issue, then children should undergo such test from 2 years of age
People who are age 20 or older
People below forty, should go for the test for a healthier future in every five years. Whereas men within the age range 45 to 65 should opt for this every one to two years. And the time period is same for women within the age range of 55 to 65.
What should my cholesterol levels be?
Cholesterol level is measured in the units known as mill moles per liter of blood. And written as mmol/L. therefore the total cholesterol level for healthy adults should be 5mmol/L or less, LDL should be 3mmol/L or less and HDL should be above 1 mmol/L. whereas the total cholesterol should be 4mmol/L or less, LDL level should be 2mm0l/L or less for those high risk people. The risk factors and treatment of such high level or low level of cholesterol depends on other crucial factors like high blood pressure and smoking.
The above cholesterol level is just a universal figure, but can’t be same for every people, as everyone is different. So it is always advised to consult with your doctor, and inquire about your cholesterol level, and what is your normal level, and how can you control the level. It’s true that children are less prone to high level of cholesterol build yup, still you need to check cholesterol level once or twice before the age of 18. On the other hand if any child found with high level of cholesterol, then you have to monitor the level continuously and consult with your doctor periodically.
