Lipid are set of organic compounds having various types of oils, waxes, fats, triglycerides and sterols which are insoluble in water and soluble in common organic solvents such as alcohols etc. In simple words, we can say that fats present in blood, called lipids.
On combination with various proteins lipid forms lipoproteins to which we usually call as cholesterol. Mainly there are three types of lipoproteins present in our blood which are High-DensityLipoproteins (HDL), Low-Density Lipo-proteins (LDL), and Very Low-Density Lipoproteins (VLDL). HDL, considered as the good cholesterol as it prevents the formation of cholesterol in arteries and also helps in removing it. LDL contrary, considered as bad cholesterol as it is only responsible for the formation of cholesterol in arteries and causes blockages in arteries which is the reason for strokes or heart attacks.
A normal LDL level is often considered to be less than or equal to 130 mg per dL. When this level gets raised than the fat starts to form on the surface of blood vessels, this fat plugs up your arteries and hinders the blood flow from them. So, if the artery going through brain gets blocked there is a high risk of stroke, and when this happens for artery going through heart there is a high probability of heart attack.
What are the reasons for High storage of fats in the blood?
Well, its answer one can give by his own, as the main reason for this depends on our food habits. Modern lifestyle has led to the habit of fast foods and other deep-fried foods which are no doubt tasty but at the same time harmful for our body if taken regularly. Foods containing a high level of saturated fats like meat, chocolate, dairy products, baked and processed foods increases the level of cholesterol in the blood.
The other reason can be genes, as some people might have inherited this disorder from their parents. High level of cholesterol can also be due to certain medical conditions including stress, kidney and liver diseases, diabetes, hypothyroidism and alcoholism etc.
There are no signs of high cholesterol levels without a blood test. A blood test, conducted after keeping fast of about 8 to 10 hours.
High Lipid Levels
If your body has attained a high lipid level for any reason be food habits, hereditary or due to other illness you have to lower this level to remain healthy.
For lowering the high lipid level, you can do the following things:
- Limit your quality and quantity by eating suitable and eating according to requirement. Avoid fried foods, eat grilled meat by removing excess fat initially, eat egg whites and egg substitute avoid egg yolks, use low-fatdiary products, use more fiber in your diet. you can find fiber in excess in fruits, whole grain cereals, legumes and vegetables. So you can eat fiber, enriched fruits and vegetables in two to three servings in a day.
- The best way to reduce blood cholesterol is exercising daily. Various aerobic exercises such as swimming, cycling, running and walking are good and beneficial for reducing blood cholesterol as doing exercise lowers the blood sugar levels, blood pressure and also reduces the stress level of the person. Exercising also helps in reducing calories which will reduce your weight. Reducing weight will also make you safe from other diseases also and moreover make you feel fresh and active.
- Using recommended medicines is also the method of lowering the cholesterol in the blood. Medicines are often, given by doctors when you are already at higher lipid levels and you have to immediately lower your cholesterol.
- Quitting smoking is beneficial as it will increase the HDL level which in turns helps in reducing LDL
Vitamin D commonly known as the sunshine vitamin, as it is produced by our own body as a reaction to sun exposure so, Vitamin D is actually not a vitamin but a pro-hormone but can also be found in certain food items or supplements which, can be used in certain Vitamin D deficiencies or when there is less availability of sunlight.
